APPLE MAPS

OVERVIEW

Apple Maps is a navigation service that helps people find directions to reach their destinations by the following means:

- Displaying detailed city maps

- Checking real-time traffic conditions

- Finding the most specificity route to the destination

However, I found some functional parts of Apple Maps that need to be improved for a better user experience as a user myself. I did little modification based on the problems that users experience with existent Apple Maps to fulfill satisfaction with using the application.

CONTEXT

Apple devised a useful and usable design for navigation that has made its map application one of the most popular navigations in the world. As the forerunner of many other competitors, Apple has been inevitably compared with those offering better services. Even though Apple keeps updating the latest versions of the navigation map for users to provide better service, detailed parts of its essential functions need to be improved. This tiny problem is serious enough to raise awareness because laking essential functions as a navigation service application could be one of the main reasons for losing loyal customers and decreasing competitiveness in the market place.

CHALLENGE

The challenge was to keep the functionality of the original version as much as I can and redesign the Apple Maps with some modifications for a better user experience. I focus on reducing inconvenient factors and adding necessary details based on the experiences of Apple users.

PERSONA

To identify personas, I conducted desk research and guerrilla interviews to understand customers’ struggles while using Apple Maps.

USER INSIGHTS

USER GOALS

  • Updating the “Add Stop” button by adding space so that users can type specific destinations or addresses rather than simply clicking given choices for stops.

  • Reducing unnecessary time entering information about the next destination after ending navigation to the first destination.

  • Decreasing the possibility that users will go to competitors’ map applications when searching for more than one destination during a single trip

  • Allowing users are able to plan long trips by adding consecutive destinations

USER FLOW - MOBLE APP

Scenario- A user searches for a destination with more than one stopovers by adding either specific addresses or from given options.

Lessons and learned

It was a valuable experience to learn how little adjustment in design can make a big difference in our lives and affect to make different results. Additionally, completing this project was a great opportunity to deeper understand about the problem and users and learn more about how to think and design in a human-centered way.
